Fractional CFO

When Does a Business Need a Fractional CFO?

Most small businesses start out managing their finances with a bookkeeper, or sometimes just the owner and a spreadsheet. That works fine in the early days. But as a business grows, the financial questions get more complicated, and that's usually the point where a fractional CFO starts to make sense.

A few signs it might be time:

Revenue has crossed a threshold where decisions get harder. Once a business is generating consistent revenue, usually in the high six figures or more, the financial picture involves more moving parts: cash flow timing, tax planning, pricing strategy, and forecasting. A bookkeeper tracks what happened. A CFO helps decide what happens next.

You're making decisions without real financial visibility. If pricing, hiring, or expansion decisions are being made on gut feel rather than projections and margin analysis, that's a sign the business has outgrown basic bookkeeping.

You're preparing to raise money or take on debt. Lenders and investors expect clean financials, forecasts, and someone who can speak to the numbers with authority. A fractional CFO helps get a business "investor ready" without the cost of a full-time hire.

Growth is outpacing the systems supporting it. Rapid growth is a good problem, but it strains financial processes that worked fine at a smaller scale. A CFO helps build the infrastructure to scale.

You don't need (or can't yet justify) a full-time CFO. This is really the core value of the fractional model. A full-time CFO salary is a significant fixed cost. A fractional CFO gives a business senior-level financial strategy on a part-time basis, scaled to what the business actually needs.

If any of this sounds familiar, it's worth a conversation about what fractional CFO support could look like for your business:
